Never Trust the Trailers

Dolphin Tale
When I originally read about this movie on imdb (before any trailer, photos, anything was released) I laughed out loud. How can you turn a story about a dolphin with no tale into a movie? Well aparently they have. And it's a TRUE story. Don't get me wrong, I think the real story is amazing, I think the movie is stupid. I don't think enough viewers will be able to connect with the movie to make it a box office success.
Though I do love the fact that Morgan Freeman seems to be in everything.
Prediction: Feel-good movie with meh ratings
Breaking Dawn
And here it is, part one of the final book. The one where Bella and Edward get married, have sex (finally), Bella gets knocked up with a mutant vampire baby that is killing her, Edward turns her into a vampire to save her, Jacob falls in love with a baby, and they run around afraid that the Volturi are going to kill them all. Sorry to ruin the plot, but it's hard to believe that so much weird stuff can happen in one book, let alone two movies.
Let's be frank, it won't be the best movie out there by far but because of the huge fan base of tweens in team jacob/edward t-shirts it won't do bad at the box office.
I'm not going to hate on this movie because i'll then have every twilight fan trolling me.
Prediction: I don't have high expectations of the movie but it will do well in the box office and hardcore fans will love it (the pillow biting scene!)

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Yay, another hollywood reboot of a franchise! Yipeeeeee!!!!! That has really worked out well for the countless other remakes (let's not live through Star Wars Episode 2 all over again, ok?
In all seriousness, this movie just looks boring. I just don't think that there is enough of a good story to keep viewers interested. And also because of the fact that we know the ending (apes ruling the planet and such) there really aren't any huge surprises.
Personally, i'd say we have to beware the primates that are already hear, such as this creepy Bonobo (They make spears to kill their prey and have sex instead of fighting!).

Spy Kids 4
When the first Spy Kids movie came out, I loved it. It was one of my favourite movies. I thought the world of it. I was ten. Now the fourth and hopefully last installment is coming to theaters in August. With dizzying effects and corny spy gear, this movie aims to be Mission Impossible for eight year olds. Will it achieve that? Probably not. The past films were mediocre at best and this one seems to be sopping up whatever revenue might be left from the series. The acting looks bad (sorry Jessica Alba!) but is cool to see the original spy kids played by Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara have cameos in the movie instead of being completely written out.
Prediction: Kids will like it, but it might be one to save for when it comes out on DVD
The Vow
What happens when you put together two romantic movie superstars? Apparently this movie. Rachel McAdams is perhaps this generation's go to leading woman for the genre and let's admit, she does a great job at it. And now Channing Tatum in all of his muscly glory has joined it as well. But personally, I don't really like his acting. I just don't think he can give a strong performance with the emotional depth that is needed for a story like this. Remember Dear John? Yeah, let's not go back to that one again.
Overall (and you will discover this eventually) I am not a fan of romantic movies. It's not because I'm not romantic and don't like all that feel good mushy stuff, but rather because they all seem to follow the same path and have the same outcome. There are a few that stand out for being different (500 days of summer, the notebook) but do I think that this will be one of them? Nope. Hopefully director Michael Sucsy (Grey Gardens) will be able to make this into a good movie.
Prediction: Typical romance movie
Side Note: Sam Neil is in it too? AKA the guy from Jurassic Park. What?

Opening this Week 6/2/11
X-Men: First Class
"Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender) are two young men discovering their powers. Banding together with fellow mutants to stop a threat to the world, a rift grows between the two forces, leading to the founding of Professor X's X-Men and Magneto's Brotherhood, and the beginning of their eternal war." -IMDB
I'll admit that I am geeky enough to want to see this movie. I loved the other movies even though some of them received mediocre reviews. With amazing actors (James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender) and Matthew Vaughn (Kickass) directing, I hope that the movie will be able to live up to the hype. The trailer's music still haunts me and the fact that we know what happens between Professor X and Magneto only heightens the drama.
Prediction: Good Movie
Beginners
"At the age of 75, Hal (Christopher Plummer) decides to tell his son, Oliver (Ewan McGregor) that he (a) has terminal cancer and (b) is a gay man with a younger lover." -IMDB
I don't think that this movie will be this year's Black Swan (it has already been teased after it's Toronto Film Festival debut) but I think it will still perform well. I can't hide my love for Ewan McGregor and I appreciated the subtle humour in the trailer; the subtitles as if the dog was talking, or Hal asking his son what kind of music was playing at the club. It doesn't see like your average feel-good movie because the plot is a little out there but overall I think audiences will walk away happily.
Prediction: Not amazing but you'll feel good after seeing it
Submarine
"15-year-old Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) has two objectives: To lose his virginity before his next birthday, and to extinguish the flame between his mother (Sally Hawkins) and an ex-lover (Paddy Considine) who has resurfaced in her life." -IMDB
I love the humour in this trailer and the plain faced delivery by the actors. Although british humour is sometimes not understood by Americans, this is one movie that I'd urge people to see.
Prediction: Great movie, most people won't see it because of distribution
Beautiful Boy
"A married couple on the verge of separation (Michael Sheen and Maria Bello) turn to one another in the wake of a shocking act committed by Sam (Kyle Gallner), their 18-year-old son."-IMDB
I missed the advanced screening for this movie but in all reality I'm not too upset. I think it pushes the boundaries and is a great intellectual film, but has very heavy subject matter for a summer crowd (let's face it, most people would rather see robots fighting this summer).
Prediction: Pretty good movie that won't be widely seen
Rejoice and Shout
"A documentary on Gospel music's 200-year history."-IMDB
Ehhhh..... personally it doesn't really interest me and overall I think in the scheme of documentary films this one isn't going to be groundbreaking.
Prediction: Nope
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first film in Columbia Pictures' three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson's literary blockbuster The Millennium Trilogy. Directed by David Fincher and starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, the film is based on the first novel in the trilogy, which altogether have sold 50 million copies in 46 countries and become a worldwide phenomenon. The screenplay is by Steven Zaillian.
-Columbia Pictures
Who'd have thought that the girl who broke Mark Zuckerberg's heart in the Social Network could play such a fierce character? Though the trailer seems to follow both the novel and the previous movie, I have faith in David Fincher's ability to put his artistic mark on it and create a movie that will not only draw fans of the book but countless others as well.
I also love the cover of Immigrant Song by Trent Razor. It just make the trailer seem that much more badass. The fast cuts that catapult the viewer through the trailer only add to my wanting to see it. It shows enough of the movie that I am interested but not enough that it reveals everything about the plot (one of my biggest pet peeves).
I can't wait for this movie to hit theatres.
Prediction: Awesome
