Opening this Week 6/2/11

X-Men: First Class
"Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Erik Lensherr (Michael Fassbender) are two young men discovering their powers. Banding together with fellow mutants to stop a threat to the world, a rift grows between the two forces, leading to the founding of Professor X's X-Men and Magneto's Brotherhood, and the beginning of their eternal war." -IMDB

I'll admit that I am geeky enough to want to see this movie. I loved the other movies even though some of them received mediocre reviews. With amazing actors (James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender) and Matthew Vaughn (Kickass) directing, I hope that the movie will be able to live up to the hype. The trailer's music still haunts me and the fact that we know what happens between Professor X and Magneto only heightens the drama.

Prediction: Good Movie

Beginners

"At the age of 75, Hal (Christopher Plummer) decides to tell his son, Oliver (Ewan McGregor) that he (a) has terminal cancer and (b) is a gay man with a younger lover." -IMDB

I don't think that this movie will be this year's Black Swan (it has already been teased after it's Toronto Film Festival debut) but I think it will still perform well. I can't hide my love for Ewan McGregor and I appreciated the subtle humour in the trailer; the subtitles as if the dog was talking, or Hal asking his son what kind of music was playing at the club. It doesn't see like your average feel-good movie because the plot is a little out there but overall I think audiences will walk away happily.

Prediction: Not amazing but you'll feel good after seeing it

Submarine
"15-year-old Oliver Tate (Craig Roberts) has two objectives: To lose his virginity before his next birthday, and to extinguish the flame between his mother (Sally Hawkins) and an ex-lover (Paddy Considine) who has resurfaced in her life." -IMDB

I love the humour in this trailer and the plain faced delivery by the actors. Although british humour is sometimes not understood by Americans, this is one movie that I'd urge people to see.

Prediction: Great movie, most people won't see it because of distribution

Beautiful Boy
"A married couple on the verge of separation (Michael Sheen and Maria Bello) turn to one another in the wake of a shocking act committed by Sam (Kyle Gallner), their 18-year-old son."-IMDB

I missed the advanced screening for this movie but in all reality I'm not too upset. I think it pushes the boundaries and is a great intellectual film, but has very heavy subject matter for a summer crowd (let's face it, most people would rather see robots fighting this summer).

Prediction: Pretty good movie that won't be widely seen

Rejoice and Shout
"A documentary on Gospel music's 200-year history."-IMDB

Ehhhh..... personally it doesn't really interest me and overall I think in the scheme of documentary films this one isn't going to be groundbreaking.

Prediction: Nope
